It was bred in the Netherlands in 1955. Since 1972 it has been common in Western Europe – with considerable growth rates. The Elstar is a medium-sized, round apple. It has a yellow skin, which can be orange-red to deep red on the side facing the sun. On the calyx side there is often a slight russeting. The Elstar has a yellow, firm and juicy flesh. Its taste is sweet and fine-sour. Many describe it as nicely aromatic and refreshing.
